When you are checking the fluid in your car it is very important to notice not only the level but the condition of the fluid.
New transmission fluid looks nice to red almost a cherry color, it will be fairly clear. Once the unit starts burning up where the fluid is very aged it will breakdown and turn a burnt color, very dark, it will actually get a burnt smell to it also.
So checking the smell of the fluid is important and then if you have water contamination. When you first check it it won't be separated it will actually be mixed in to the point where it looks like like a strawberry milkshake. This is actually a little bit too red sometimes it will be a lot lighter depending on the quantity of water that's in it.
If you see this then you've got water in the transmission which ninety percent of the time comes from the cooling system of your engine through your cooler or radiator unless the car was for some reason under water.
So it is very important to check not only the condition and level but the color and in some cases the smell of the fluid
